A cute new service for new Twitter soon-to-be dads: Goingtobeadad.com I was astounded to see how many people were announcing to the world that they are going to be dads every day. So I thought - wouldn’t it be nice to have a page on the web somewhere that welcomes all of those people? So this is a simple one page site that shows you all of the tweets by soon-to-be-dads who tweet “going to be a dad” with a big “Congratulations!” message from the big blue Odadeo dad. You can get an RSS feed of all of the tweets and I’m also planning on retweeting some of the tweets as “@username is @goingtobeadad!” but I’ve just got to figure out how to filter out ones that aren’t quite relevant, like “my brother is going to be a dad” and so on. I guess this is one step even before Tweetlet! Now… who’s for family planning on Twitter?!

Odadeo goes public! “Are we nearly there?” (beta) http://www.tombeardshaw.com/items/view/519

Odadeo.com is very proud to announce that it is opening up to the public with it’s new “Are we nearly there yet?” beta. Five months after the “Far too early” beta was launched by Stef Lewandowski, there has been a huge amount of work on the site and the beginnings of a very cool dads community. Tom Beardshaw has joined the team as community manager and we reckon it’s now time to open it up to the dads all over the world. The “Are we nearly there yet?” beta is for dads to join Odadeo as we create what we hope will be the ultimate website and online community for dads - an social web app that can actually help you become a great dad! Using the invite code “nearlythere” (which is now pre-inserted into the signup form), anyone can now join the community. We’re keeping the invite code system so that we can offer special features to particular groups of dads (watch this space for “newdad” goodies!). Here are some of the features of the “Are we nearly there yet?” beta: Badges: you can now connect to dads like you by adding badges such as “expecting”, “geek” or “married” - find out what they’re pledging and send them a message on the badge comment wall. Pledges: Click on your pledges to find useful links and tips to help you fulfill your pledges. Tag your pledges to get more relevant suggestions from the community. DADSDAQ: When you make some progress on a pledge, ‘pip’ it - Odadeo will keep track of how you’re doing with your very own DADSDAQ graph. Friends’ DADSDAQ: Make some friends on Odadeo and you can compare how you’re doing. Global DADSDAQ: The Odadeo homepage now carries a DADSDAQ graph showing the progress of all Odadeo dads. Q&A: Ask the Odadeo community a question to help you become a great dad. Invite friends: You can now search your webmail to invite friends to join Odadeo. The “Are we nearly there yet?” beta is for testing the system and finding out how dads want to develop the site, find out what features are working, and which are not. So please sign up, tell everyone you know who is a dad and give us your feedback at our Get Satisfaction page. Sign up to the public beta!

It’s Social Networking for Babies - Twitter From the Cradle - NYTimes.com http://www.tombeardshaw.com/items/view/163

NYT looks at social networks for babies... vicarious virtual living for parents. Mentions Odadeo, Totspot and a few others.

They didn't really "get" Odadeo though...

I'm joining Odadeo! http://www.tombeardshaw.com/items/view/136

I've agreed to become community manager at Odadeo - a great new web app / social network for Dads.

I sat down yesterday with Stef Lewandowski, the founder and lead programmer to discuss the future of the site.

I'll be available to anyone if they need any help with using the site and I'll be helping the community to grow and Stef to get the site working right for its users.

Odadeo is currently in private beta and you need an invite to join - contact me. We need dads to help us test the system to make sure it's really nailed before it goes public.

It's a very clever site with a big aim - to enable us to answer the question - "how am I going to be a better dad?". I've been using the site for a while now and I really think it works!

What we do at Odadeo is to make Pledges. You can make your own, or you can join in with Pledges others have made. The most popular pledges on the site currently are:

  • Learn some songs
  • Read more stories
  • Learn some cool tricks to impress the kids

When you do something towards one of your pledges, you can 'pip' it - and your progress on each is shown on a 'DADSDAQ" graph so you can track your progress. Here's mine:

dadsdaq

There's lots of great things about Odadeo but one I like the best is that you can create a profile for your child and add photos - with complete privacy control over who gets to see your child - and the defaults are 'private'. We're very serious about building a site that dads can feel confident about.

There are loads of exciting development coming soon as the site moves closer towards an open public beta, but we want to work with Beta testers to get the site right before it does.

If you're an Odadeo beta tester with something to say about the site, why not meet us at Diigo, where we can share notes and thoughts on the pages?

I'm really looking forward to work with Stef and the Odadeo dads - he's a top notch programmer with a great idea and dads deserve something this good!
